You Just Never Know What’s Behind the Door…

A few weeks ago I took my car in for wheel alignment.

The tyre shop was particularly busy that morning, so the owner suggested I wander down the road to a nearby coffee shop while I waited.

“I’ll give you a call when it’s ready,” he said.

Sounded like a good plan.

I’d driven past the place hundreds of times.

Probably more.

It sat slightly back from the road and, from the outside, looked fairly ordinary.

If I’m honest, I’d never given it much thought.

I assumed it was just another little coffee shop.

I walked there with fairly low expectations.

Somewhere to answer a few emails.

Have a coffee.

Pass an hour.

Then I opened the door.

I actually stopped in my tracks.

Inside was the most charming little Italian deli.

The smell of fresh bread drifted through the room.

Shelves were filled with olive oils, cheeses, cured meats and all sorts of wonderful things that immediately made you want to stay a little longer.

It felt warm.

Unhurried.

Comfortable.

Almost like I’d stepped into a little corner of Italy hidden away in Johannesburg.

I found a table near the back and ordered breakfast.

Nothing elaborate.

Just simple food made well.

Along with one of the best cups of coffee I’ve had in Johannesburg.

I’ve been back several times since.

Without really planning it, it’s quietly become one of my favourite places.

The funny thing is…

It hadn’t just opened.

It hadn’t recently changed owners.

It hadn’t suddenly become better.

It had been there all along.

I was simply the one who had never walked through the door.

I wonder how often we do that in life.

We assume we already know what’s around us.

We drive the same roads.

Order the same meal.

Listen to the same music.

Read the same authors.

Visit the same places.

Not because we’ve explored all the alternatives.

But because we’ve stopped looking.

Sometimes the most interesting discoveries aren’t on the other side of the world.

They’re just behind a door we’ve never thought to open.

Fragrance works much the same way.

Most people discover a scent they enjoy.

Or a fragrance family that feels comfortable.

Fresh.

Woody.

Sweet.

Citrus.

And that’s where they stay.

Not because it’s the only thing they’ll ever love.

But because they never quite get around to opening another door.

Then one day they try something completely different.

Something they would never normally have chosen.

And they find themselves saying:

“I didn’t know I liked this.”

Those are wonderful moments.

Because they’re not just about discovering a new fragrance.

They’re about discovering something new about yourself.

One of the reasons I encourage people to explore fragrance isn’t because their favourite is wrong.

Quite the opposite.

Your favourite is probably your favourite for a very good reason.

But every now and then it’s worth opening another door.

Not because you’ll always find something better.

But because occasionally…
