August is Women’s month when we celebrate the great women in our lives, mentors who have shaped our world views – mothers, grandmothers, teachers and others.
It’s easy to get caught in the celebrity trap and look at women who have been successful in business or entertainment and so on.
For me the most important women are the women who shape our lives day to day.
We all have inspirational women in our lives, we sometimes don’t recognise their influence in our lives until some time has passed, to us they are just mom, an aunt, a sister or a daughter.
The Perfumery was to some extent inspired by my mom’s brush with cancer, but there are other women in my life who have also shaped my world views.
My aunt Netty, my mom’s fiercely independent oldest sister who was the matriarch of our family until her tragic death in 2002.
My sister who started her own stables and horseriding business at 20, 27 years ago and has endured through a broken back, broken shoulder, broken collar bone and her crowning glory when she was kicked in the chest last year and had to endure an 8 hour operation to repair the damage to her heart as a result. She stills loves horses and riding and shows no signs of slowing down.
My two horse crazy daughters who have brought great joy, occasional frustration and sometimes chaos into our lives. Watching them grow from tiny babies into blossoming young women has been an amazing gift that I will be forever grateful for.
My wife who has put up with me for going on 25 years, who brings great calm and stability to our household. She is the love of my life and I thank God everyday for that chance meeting many years ago in Cape Town.
My amazing team without whom The Perfumery would not function.
These women have shaped my life and influenced my views. These are the women I would like to honour this women’s day.
