Carefree holidays and thoughts of my mom…

We hope you all had a wonderful weekend and for those who celebrated, a happy Easter.

Mother’s Day is coming up in a couple of weeks. Over the years people have shared with us some wonderful and touching accounts of their moms. This is the first in this series that we would like to share with you. 

“The music is pumping, we’re singing, it’s been a wonderful day. I can still feel the salt on my skin.

It’s such a carefree time.

When the sun sets and we come off the beach, then it’s time to get ready for the chilled nightlife of the South Coast.

My mom gave me a bottle of perfume as a gift when I finished matric. I felt so grown up when I put it on. School life is only a few weeks behind us, and it feels like we have our whole lives in front of us.

Now it feels like a lifetime ago.

I always loved that fragrance that my mom had given me as a gift all those years ago. It’s long been discontinued, and in any event had become so unaffordable I had stopped buying it.

I wore that perfume for a few years after school, all through university. My mom died in a car accident a few years after I finished my studies so that scent holds a special place in my heart.

Now I have kids and they are almost grown up, just out of school and starting their lives for real. Perfume is more accessible now than it was when I was younger, but I have always made a point of giving my children a few special ones, or at least I think they are special. Scents that remind me of them. 

Maybe someday those scents will remind them of me.”
