Sometimes love doesn’t fade.
It gets tired buried under school runs, work deadlines, school fees and the question of what’s for dinner.
Dru and Carol had been married for almost twenty years.
Two kids. A dog. A life that ran on calendars, alarms, and half-finished cups of coffee.
Their anniversary was coming up that weekend, and neither of them had planned anything big, they’d probably just go out somewhere. Not because they didn’t care — but because life had been… full. You know how it is.
One morning, while cleaning out a drawer in her work desk, Carol came across an old bottle of perfume. She recognised it immediately.
Almost empty. Slightly dusty. A little forgotten.
She picked it up, sprayed a little into the air.
It had aged a bit, as had she, but there it was. She sprayed a little on herself.
She thought about that nervous, hopeful, butterflies in her tummy first-date feeling. The Spur in Boksburg. The way he kept pretending to read the menu trying to be cool and then knocked his beer over spilling it all over her. He lunged to catch the beer and caught her squarely on the bridge of her nose with his menu and broke her glasses. The way she’d gone home that night thinking, “Hmm not so sure about him”
She had bought that perfume for that date. It felt like a lifetime ago and like no time had passed all at the same time.
That evening when Dru walked in the door, she was there to meet him. He gave her a kiss, then stopped.
He looked at her and smiled, “You smell like you did on our first date.” “What a disaster. I didn’t think I’d see you again after that, but here we are”
They laughed. And just like that, for a moment, they weren’t tired parents or busy adults anymore. They felt young or at least younger.
For their anniversary that year, they didn’t go out. They farmed out the kids and ordered takeout. Sat at the kitchen table. Talked. Remembered. And somehow, that simple evening felt more romantic than anything expensive ever could.
It’s funny how scent does that.
It doesn’t just smell nice.
It reminds us who we were.
And sometimes, who we still are underneath it all.
Such a sweet story to remind us that renewed romance is just a fragrance away.
