I’ve spent the last ten days clearing out my mom’s home.
She’s moved into a smaller place, and after thirty years in the same house… there’s a lot to go through.
Drawers. Cupboards. Boxes that haven’t been opened in years.
I’d be lying if I said I’ve enjoyed the process.
Quite the opposite.
But every cloud has a silver lining, and every now and then I come across something that causes me to pause.
I cleared a bookshelf that held all the old photo albums and came across one I haven’t looked at in decades.
From a time when I was a much younger man.
And in a few of the photos… someone I hadn’t thought about in a long time.
My first real girlfriend.
The first relationship that felt like it mattered.
There was much that I liked about her, but one thing came to the fore in that moment.
I remembered that I loved the way she smelled.
It wasn’t obvious.
It wasn’t loud.
But it was always there.
Familiar. Close. Easy.
At some point, I remember asking what she wore.
She showed me the bottle.
I sprayed it once.
And I remember thinking:
I don’t like this at all.
It didn’t make sense.
How could I love the way she smelled…
But dislike the perfume she wore?
At the time, I can’t say it caused me great conflict, but I did find it odd.
It was a small thing, so I left it there and never gave it much further thought.
It’s only now, much later, that I understand what was really going on.
What I liked…
Was never the first smell.
Fragrance doesn’t stay still.
It changes.
What you smell in the first few moments is just the opening.
Brighter. Sharper. Designed to catch your attention.
But it doesn’t last.
As it settles, the “real” perfume starts to emerge.
The soul of the scent.
Softer.
Warmer.
Closer to the skin.
And over time, it becomes something more personal.
Something that feels like it belongs to the person wearing it.
That’s what I remembered.
Not the opening.
Not what came out of the bottle.
But what it became on her.
This is where a lot of people get caught out.
They smell a fragrance once.
Make a decision.
And expect it to stay the same.
But it won’t.
The first smell isn’t the real smell.
Which is why the best way to understand a fragrance is simple:
Give it time.
Wear it.
Let it settle.
Because somewhere between the first spray and a few hours later…
It reveals itself.
And that version…
Is often the one that matters most.
The only real way to understand this is to live with a scent for a while.
Not just smell it once.
Not just judge the opening.
But wear it through the day and see what it becomes.
That’s exactly why we’ve structured things the way we have.
So you can explore properly, without overcommitting.
Start small and explore:
Or, if you already know what works for you:
Different scents.
Different evolutions.
Different versions of you.
Sometimes what you think you don’t like…
Just hasn’t had time to become what it really is.
Until next time
