I never received “You smell Amazing” compliments until I started doing this

There are few things more rewarding than to be recognised by strangers for having done something they admire. Someone coming up to you and telling you they like the scent you are wearing certainly falls into that. Sure on occasion, it can be somewhat embarrassing but on the whole it’ll leave you feeling quite good about life.

Like most people when I started wearing fragrances I didn’t take much note about really how a scent smelled and what it was in that scent that I found appealing. It was much more the case that if I liked the scent I would wear it and if not, then not.

In the early 2000’s I was lucky enough to spend some time in the wine industry. I was working with a local cellar that produced organic wine that they wanted to sell into the export market and I was tasked with finding that market.

I had been interested in wine before that and had completed a few courses through the Cape Wine Academy and had been to a fair number of tastings so I thought I knew my way around a bottle of wine.

Even so it was a real shock to the system when I went to my first London Wine Fair and had to taste over 100 wines in an afternoon! The ability to break down what you are tasting into different flavour components and profiles and to do that quickly with no judgement takes some practice.

After that baptism of fire and hundreds of bottles of wine tasted, I found I had a knack for it.

Instinctively I started to apply those lessons learned in my daily life. I started to become really aware of what I liked and what I didn’t and to break down why.

I didn’t have much of a scent collection back then, but the wine business allowed me amazing travel adventures and in the process exposure to the perfume counters at duty free.

It’s not always on the packaging (in fact it is seldom on the packaging), but it’s fairly easy to find a note breakdown and reviews, what the wine industry would call tasting notes, for pretty much every fragrance you would come across.

When smelling different scents, I would find the ones I liked. I would then look up the note breakdown and read one or two reviews and then go back and smell them again, this time with greater awareness. By taking this little extra time to sort of get to know a fragrance I started to become far more aware of what it was that I liked in the scent. I would take time to smell each component listed and see if I could find others.

When I bought a fragrance I knew I really liked it.

An interesting by product of this is that I started to choose scents that I think were better suited to me.

Even more interesting was that strangers, men and women alike started noticing the scents I was wearing. I started getting compliments, smiles and other attention.

It’s a really cool feeling.

It’s one of the reasons we started to offer scented samples and why we include a tag with our 2ml and 10ml pack sizes. The reason they are there is for you to try the scent on the tag and let it develop over time. You can find the note breakdown and a description of the scent on our website.

Next time you buy a scent see if you can find all the notes listed and maybe find a few of your own.

It’s a great super power to master.

Until next time
