They had made contact through a mutual friend and had been texting back and forth for a couple of weeks. Sometimes it felt promising. Other times, not so much.
They both agreed it would be “just a coffee.”
No pressure. No expectations. Just a short meet-up to see if the conversation flowed as easily in real life as it sometimes had on their phones.
Still, first dates have a way of making people overthink everything.
What to wear.
What to say.
How to act like you’re not trying too hard.
And now here they were.
“How about that table over there?” he said pointing to a table over by the window.
“Yeah, that looks nice,” she said
He pulled out her chair, then took his own seat.
The waiter came over to take their order. Americano with cream for him, latte for her.
They chatted politely at first, small talk, how’s your week been and so on.
The coffees arrived; he took a sip enjoying the creamy bitterness.
She reached into her bag and pulled out three small perfume samples and placed them gently on the table.
“Okay,” she said, smiling. “You choose.”
He laughed. “Choose what?”
“My date perfume,” she said with a slightly mischievous smile.
“Well this is different” he thought, not sure what to do next.
She picked up the first scent and held it up for him to smell. The first one was soft and comforting, reminding him of his gran’s garden. The next one smelled bright, fresh and a little sophisticated, “swank hotel lobby” he thought. The last one was different— like velvet and spice with something softer underneath. Not something he’d normally choose. “This one,” he said, feeling unsure as he pointed to number three.
“I was hoping you’d pick that one”, she grinned as she sprayed on the perfume.
“Well, that was an interesting party trick,” he said.
She smiled, and leaned back in her chair. “I’ve never done that before, just thought it would be fun.”
He smiled and leaned in “And so it was, so fun,” teasing her just a little and just like that the apprehension eased.
It wasn’t a nervous first date anymore — it felt somehow familiar.
They ended up staying far longer than planned, laughing and chatting until the staff started stacking the chairs.
Whether it turned into something long-term or just a lovely chapter, it didn’t really matter. That small moment made it special.
That’s the thing about scent—it turns ordinary moments into something you remember. Maybe that’s the real magic of any romantic moment. Not the grand gesture, but the small thing that makes someone smile.
That small moment — three little samples on a café table — did something clever.
It took the pressure off.
First dates can feel like auditions. Like you’re trying to get everything just right. The outfit. The words. The version of yourself you present.
But scent changes that dynamic.
It shifts the focus from impressing to expressing.
Instead of asking,
“Will they like me?”
It quietly asks,
“Which version of me feels right today?”
And sometimes, the most interesting choice isn’t the obvious one.
The one he picked wasn’t what he would normally choose.
It wasn’t what she usually wore.
But it worked.
Not because it was perfect.
Because it felt honest.
That’s the real power of having options.
Not to overthink.
Not to perform.
But to explore.
alentine’s doesn’t need a grand gesture.
Sometimes it’s as simple as letting someone explore — or letting yourself choose a version of you that feels a little braver, a little softer, a little more playful.
That’s exactly why our 10ml collections work so well this time of year.
They aren’t about committing to one fragrance straight away.
They’re about discovering which one feels right.
Five scents.
Different moods.
Room to experiment.
Because romance doesn’t start with certainty.
It starts with curiosity.
If you’re planning something for Saturday, you’ve still got time, but not a lot 😀
Until next time
