The Scents of Christmas: Tradition vs. Sunshine—Which Side Are You On?

We are now well and truly into the Christmas season. In our area many of our neighbours have put up lights and other decorations.

The smell of Christmas is in the air with mince pies and hot cross buns.

This got me thinking about what does Christmas or what should Christmas smell like?

Most festive scents have spicy tones of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger over a fruity base. If one lives in the Northern hemisphere (Americas and Europe), this would make sense with cold weather, gluhwein, spiced hot chocolate and lots of pastry goods on offer.

But we live here on the bottom tip of Africa. Our Christmas lunch is far more likely to be a braai, than it is a roast turkey.

We have been talking about developing festive scents for a while now, but we can’t agree what those scents should be. Do we go with fresh, bright scents more in keeping with the weather and the lifestyle? Or with tradition? Let us know what you think, we’d love to get your ideas.

If you like traditional scents, 0001 Eau Dynamisante and 0003 Elixir Des Merveille are both fantastic spicy, fruity composition that pair perfectly with the traditions of Christmas. From our home ranges try Woody 602 – Cinnamon, Pink Pepper and Spice and 603 – Neroli Thyme and Sandalwood are lovely scents that together have the spiciness of the one with the earthy fir tones of the other, you’ll be transported to a white Christmas!

There are lots of fresh bright scents that go perfectly with our hot sunny summers. You could try 3010 Provocative Women with its clean fresh vibe or 0009 Touch of Pink which adds a little sweetness.

On the home range side 201 White Tea, Lotus Blossom and Sandalwood is a perennial favourite 203 White Floral Amber and White Musk is in my view an almost perfect scent for Christmas. It has some of the traditional spiciness, but is also fresh and floral which pairs so well with hot summer days.

There is still time to get teacher’s gifts, and for secret Santa parties, our Mists at R150 each are worth having a few in the cupboard just in case. Our diffusers are really good value at R250, buy three for only R225 each or 5 for a mere R200 each. If you want something more substantial, give a diffuser and room mist combo, get them together for just R375 per set. Throw in extended Black Friday deals and we are virtually giving them away.

For R200 you can get a selection of 3 x 10ml perfumes, that’s a perfect Christmas gift at a very affordable price. 5 x 2ml curiosity size are a give away at R100, perfect for stocking fillers.

This festive season, give gifts that last and make people happy, they will be forever grateful.

If you have a fun, sad, interesting, amusing story you would like to share with us and it’s chosen for the newsletter you’ll win R150 worth of reward points you can use whenever you like.

FOR SCENT EXPLORERS AND PIONEERS

We launched our Collections offering a couple of weeks ago. One of the challenges in choosing or experimenting with new scents is the overwhelming choice of fragrances available. With our Collections we have put together 5 fragrances for you to try that have some common connection.

This week are looking at Floral fragrances.

Floral fragrances are the beating heart of perfumery. They’re the oldest and most recognisable family—soft, romantic, joyful, and instantly familiar. Long before perfumers had laboratories full of aroma molecules, they had flowers. Ancient Egyptians pressed oil from lilies, Greeks crowned themselves in rose garlands, and medieval apothecaries captured the scent of violet and iris in their balms. For centuries, “perfume” and “flowers” were almost interchangeable ideas.

But the floral family as we know it today didn’t truly emerge until the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when modern perfumery took shape. With the arrival of synthetic aroma materials—like coumarin, ionones and aldehydes—perfumers suddenly had the tools to recreate the idea of a flower, not just the literal one. They could make a rose brighter, a jasmine cleaner, a bouquet bigger than life. This creative leap transformed florals from simple single-note scents into sophisticated compositions.

By the 1920s the floral family had blossomed into something unmistakably its own. Two perfumes in particular helped define the category. Guerlain’s Après L’Ondée (1906), with its powdery violet and soft heliotrope, captured the dreamy mood of a garden after rain. Then Chanel No. 5 (1921) arrived and rewrote the rules entirely: a bold, abstract bouquet powered by aldehydes that didn’t smell like any specific flower—but rather the memory of flowers. These iconic creations proved that florals could be delicate or daring, realistic or imaginary, comforting or glamorous.

Today, the floral family includes sub-styles like soft florals, white florals, floral-orientals, and fruity florals, each offering its own mood. Yet they all share a common thread—the emotional pull of flowers. We associate them with beauty, optimism, affection, and those fleeting moments of nature that we wish we could hold onto a little longer.

Floral fragrances have evolved from simple soliflores into a vast, expressive world of scent. They remain the most universally loved family in perfumery, not because they are safe or predictable, but because flowers—real or imagined—always have something new to say.

This is a huge category so choosing just 5 is quite a task. 1000 L’eau D’Issey introduced the idea of ozonic and watery tones and is still the quintessential example. 1001 Si with its fruity fresh sweetness is one of the defining scents in the fruity floral style. 1004 La Vie Est Belle popularised the praline vanilla vibe. 1017 Hypnotic Poison showcases a darker bourbon vanilla note that is still widely popular for those who love vanilla, but not in a baked goods kind of way. 1053 Bloom is all about tuberose. All in all a lovely selection of floral scents that will appeal to most people but still give a glimpse into the many styles of Floral scents.
