Then It Struck Him: “You Always Smell the Same.”

He hadn’t chosen it.

That was the odd part, because the rest of his life was fairly organised and intentional.

It had been a gift.

She’d handed it to him on his birthday, smiling.

“I love this. I’m sure it will smell great on you.”

He hadn’t thought much about it. It smelled good. Clean. A touch of sophistication. Easy.

Mostly, she liked it.

So he wore it.

And people noticed.

“You always smell great.”

“That scent really suits you.”

Compliments are persuasive.

Especially when you don’t really know what you like yourself.

So it became his scent.

First date scent.

Work scent.

Golf scent.

Everyday scent.

When the relationship ended, the bottle had stayed.

He didn’t question it.

It had worked.

It got reactions.

It was familiar.

Time passed.

On a coffee date one afternoon, his date paused at a fragrance display and asked casually,

“What kind of fragrances do you like?”

He realised he didn’t have an answer.

He only had that one.

The next morning he sprayed it on and paused.

It still smelled good.

But it didn’t feel like anything.

Not like memory.

Not like growth.

Not like him.

It smelled like a version of him that someone else preferred.

That’s when it struck him.

“You always smell the same.”

He wasn’t choosing it.

He was defaulting to it.

He stood there longer than usual.

For the first time in years, when he reached for it, it felt slightly alien in his hand.

He didn’t have anything else, so it would have to do.

The day felt slightly uncertain.

But also strangely open.

He didn’t know what he liked yet.

But he knew one thing.

It was time to find out.

What This Reveals

There’s nothing wrong with having a fragrance that works.

But defaulting isn’t the same as choosing.

When you only ever wear one scent, you don’t really learn what you’re drawn to.

You don’t know if you prefer:

Fresh or warm.

Clean or woody.

Subtle or bold.

Smooth or spicy.

You just know what people have responded to.

And external reaction isn’t the same as personal preference.

Preference takes comparison.

And comparison takes a little structure.

This Week’s Scent Lens

Why One Spray Doesn’t Tell the Whole Story

Part of the reason many of us don’t know what we like is because we judge a fragrance too quickly.

A perfume isn’t one single smell.

It unfolds.

It’s built in layers:

Top notes — the first impression. Bright, fresh, attention-grabbing. They fade fastest.

Heart notes — the character. Florals, spices, aromatics. This is the personality of the scent.

Base notes — the foundation. Woods, musks, amber, vanilla. These last the longest and sit closest to the skin.

Sometimes we think:

“I don’t like this.”

But what we really mean is:

“I don’t like the opening.”

Or:

“I love the opening, but not what it becomes.”

If you only wear one fragrance, you never notice these differences.

You never discover whether you’re drawn to warm bases…

or crisp openings…

or smooth woody dry-downs.

Without contrast, it’s almost impossible to know.

Discovering What You
Actually Like

The answer isn’t buying another full bottle and hoping.

It’s thoughtful experimenting.

Trying a small, focused selection built around a central theme.

Wearing one for a day.

Something else the next.

Paying attention to how it evolves — and how you feel wearing it.

That’s why our themed collections are designed the way they are.

Five fragrances.

One central theme.

Enough contrast to notice patterns.

Not so many that it becomes overwhelming.

You may still return to your reliable scent.

But at least you’ll know why.

And that changes everything.

If you’re curious to explore with intention, start with a collection that feels close to where you are now — and notice what shifts.

Clarity doesn’t come from guessing.

It comes from trying new things

It comes from noticing.

Until next time
