This scent made her lose all control…

As you know a week or two back we had a stand at the annual Blooming Affair market. I should call this series of newsletters the adventures at Blooming Affair 😁.

When we are at markets we hand out scented tags for people to smell and hopefully be enticed. It’s always fascinating to watch people’s reactions. Most people have a subtle physical reaction to the scent, we can see when the person likes the fragrance, their bodies relax and we’ll often get a smile. On occasion we’ll hand out something that really does not appeal and the person will draw away, I remember one lady who looked like she had been poked in the eye, she pulled away so fast 😂.

On occasion I can see we have really hit the bull’s eye. There was one particular lady who was wandering through the stalls and politely took our tags and moved on. She looked at a few stalls and then started smelling the tags we had given to her. She came to an abrupt halt and just stood there for about 30 seconds seemingly enraptured.

She turned back to us with a huge smile on her face. “What is this fragrance? I have to have it” she asked as she came over holding the tag out in front of her. “I have never smelled anything like it” she said holding the tag up to her nose. The fragrance, if you are wondering, was 3075 Hibiscus Mahajad by Crivelli.

She did not ask the price, in that moment, that was irrelevant, she just had to have it. I took the bottle off the shelf and she immediately sprayed it on herself. I have seldom seen someone have such a visceral experience to a perfume to where they literally cannot get enough of it.

The nature of perfume is that it makes you feel something, it’s impossible to smell a fragrance and not have an emotional response, it’s just the way we as humans are built, but it does beg the question as to why some fragrances speak to us and others just don’t.

We are all biologically predisposed to certain scents, but within this there is great nuance. Not everyone experiences a scent in the same way, there are subtle scent cues that we seek out and when we find them, those are the scents that are for us. For some people finding that scent is a physical experience and for others less so, but we all know what we like, what we love and what doesn’t do it for us.

Our upbringing, culture, what we are exposed to and our life experience, overlaid with a bit of biology all influence why we go for certain scents and not others..

Choosing perfume is a journey, not a destination. As we move through life our likes and dislikes change, we gain life experience. The perfume that blew us away in our twenties doesn’t do it for us in our thirties and so on.

We have just launched our new collections range, 5 scents put together around a theme. One of the most difficult things when choosing a new fragrance is where to start. Collections was put together with this in mind. The idea is not to find 5 fragrances that you love, although we would love that, but rather to have a “tasting/smelling” experience. Like so much in life, learning comes through doing. The more scents you are exposed to the more you will find what you like, and more importantly what you don’t like. Often you’ll be surprised by the outcomes. Try Collections here.

Collections are there to help and guide you to try new scents occasionally, there will be some that don’t move you, but every now and then you’ll come across one that you just can’t understand how you’ve lived without it 😀.

Until next time
