My mom passed away a few years ago. She was sick for a short while and passed away suddenly. My brother and I were still in high school at the time. It was a shock for my family.
It was devastating for me.
I love my Dad, he’s a man’s man kinda guy. Loves rugby, golf and braais on the weekend.
We were a fairly typical middle-class family, both my parents worked. My mom did the day-to-day stuff for us, lifts, sorted out homework and school lunches. My Dad worked a lot so wasn’t around as much.
Suddenly he’s a single parent.
This is hard.
He doesn’t know the routines and what we like on our sandwiches. He’s never bought a bra or a pack of tampons.
We’re all so sad and he’s struggling.
I have to grow up, I’m suddenly the woman of the household. I have to think about what’s for dinner and making sure we have clean uniforms.
I really missed my mom. I wear her perfume; it makes me feel like she’s close by. She had such wonderful perfume, different ones for different days. Sometimes, she’d choose one and let me wear it on the days I needed a lift.
I miss my mom.
My brother seemed fine, he and my dad had sport. I was on the debating team.
A few years have passed, and we survived, life goes on. I’m at university now and my brother just finished matric. Dad is still Dad. I know he did his best. I know it was hard for him.
I often think it was the perfume that got me through. That was what brought me closest to my mom, I always loved the way she smelled. I’d put on one of her perfumes at night before I went to bed, she would always tuck me in.
I now have my own perfumes, including a few my mom used to wear. I still sometimes wear her perfumes when I need some wisdom on life and what I really want/need is a hug from my mom.
What a touching tale to remind us of how much moms are a part of our lives.
Perfumes are the perfect gift to say, “Thanks Mom, I love and value you”.
“In the fragrance of her perfume, I found a piece of her, a reminder of her unwavering love.”
