When Your Daughter Asks for Bail Money just before Christmas 😳

Happy 2026! We hope this year will be a fantastic year for everyone.

For many of us, this past week was back to school and back to work. Hard to believe it’s already the middle of January.

The beginning of a new year is a wonderful time. Last year and all the things you didn’t get to are past and exciting plans for the new year can begin.

I wanted to share this story at the end of last year, but it happened after the last newsletter had already gone out.

We received this message from one of our daughters:

Hi Mom

I’m sending you this message via WhatsApp as I didn’t want a scene with you and dad.

I’ve decided I’m leaving school.

Mika (my friend you said you don’t like), her brother grows marijuana and he says he’ll pay us to sell it for him, and we’ll make a fortune. I also have a crush on him, and he says he likes me too.

I haven’t told you about him as I know Dad wouldn’t like his face tattoo and piercings, or that he has a criminal record and only got out of jail a couple of months back. He contacted me on Insta, and we have been chatting for about a year now, so I think I know him quite well.

Anyway, he lives in a caravan on a plot in the Vaal triangle somewhere. He says there is lots of space and he will look after me. He wants to have lots of children and so do I. As soon as we sell this crop we are going to start trying for the first one. I hope you’ll come and visit us when the baby is born.

Jay (his name is Jay) has opened my eyes to the fact that marijuana doesn’t really hurt anyone.

We’ll be growing it for ourselves and trading it with the other people that live nearby for cocaine and ecstasy, we’ll sell anything that we have extra.

I am so looking forward to it. There is just one small problem, Jay got arrested and I need money for bail. Do you think Dad will help us?

Don’t worry Mom. I’m 15 and I know how to take care of myself.

Ps. None of the above is true, I just wanted to illustrate that there are worse things in life than a poor report card, I know the school emailed them out today and I wanted to prepare you.

I thought this was quite funny. Tracy was not as amused.

Interestingly at the time of sending the Whatsapp she didn’t know what her marks were. I was quite intrigued, she is a born marketer. With this message she covered all bases. If her marks were abysmal she had tempered the delivery, if they were really good then it was just funny.

Like many parents we worry about our kids’ future, but what I have found is this current generation are really level headed and pragmatic. Most of them that we interact with know what they want to do when they leave school and have some sort of plan figured out already.

So in the words of the Offspring, the kids are alright.

I hope that everyone has a great year and remember that time plus tragedy equals humour, no matter how big the problem seems, with a bit of time and perspective it may even seem amusing.

In the movie The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel the young protagonist has a saying “Everything will be all right in the end; so if it is not all right, it is not yet the end.”

Wise words to live by.

Until next time

Rob
