On the long weekend a week or two back, my family gifted me a round of golf at one of the top golf courses the country has to offer.
The course happens to be part of a larger resort complex which includes a few 5 star hotels. We decided whilst we were there we would treat ourselves to lunch on the terrace by the pool. It was a beautiful bushveld day, clear blue skies, not too hot, just wonderful.
The setting is magnificent, the cost of building the majestic structure must have been enormous. It really was truly majestic. We chose a table that overlooked the large man-made lake and waterfall, it was picture perfect.
However all was not well, here we were on a perfect day in what looked like a perfect setting that stank like a leaking septic tank. It really did not matter where one tried to sit, there was either the overpowering smell of seweragy, swamp water or the sharp and chemical waft coming off the pool from too much chlorine.
We had a drink, to mark the occasion and left, it was just too stinky.
Two weeks later I took a trip to Durban by road. I’d left fairly early in the morning and got to the top of Van Reenen’s pass around breakfast time. I stopped at a small coffee shop there and went inside. It’s a pretty modest establishment, but it smelled of freshly brewed coffee and just baked bread. It was so inviting and welcoming.
The way a place smells is just as important, if not more important than how it looks.
We did not want to stay in that magnificent hotel for 5 mins, but I would have been happy to sit in that coffee shop for hours.
Your home is the same, it does not matter if it’s a modest pad or a palatial mansion, it must smell inviting both to you and to guests you might invite in.
