Why ‘Knock-Offs’ Might Be the Real Cure You’ve Been Looking For

This past weekend was the annual Blooming Affair spring market at Roedean School for Girls in Parktown. A percentage of the takings go to charities supported by the school; it’s always a well organised market and it’s a pleasure to be involved, thank you for inviting us.

It’s a busy day and often we don’t have the time to spend the time with individual customers that we would like to. I was busy helping two matric girls who were shopping for fragrances for their end of school trip they were planning (there is a cool story here, I’ll share in a later newsletter). Tracy was busy with packing an order for another customer.

There were two other customers browsing through what we had on offer, when two women stopped at our stand and one said to the other “Is this the place that sells those knock off perfumes?”. One of the browsing customers asked her “Why do you ask? What are you looking for in a perfume?”. I couldn’t have come up with a better response myself.

Her reply was “My perfume makes me feel whole, but it’s become too expensive and we can’t afford it any longer”

“I know how you feel, but with The Perfumery you are in good hands, their perfumes are the best. Come in, I’ll help you” said one of the customers on the stand, smiling at me.

It’s unlikely she would have shared that vulnerability with me, but to a fellow “traveller” she felt comfortable to share. As it happens she was looking for the knock-off perfume shop, but I think was expecting a lesser product. When she found an impartial guide who was enthusiastic and could show her that if you are looking for good perfume that will touch you emotionally in the same way your branded scent does, the whole experience became much richer.

She found the perfume she was after along with a couple of others, and importantly looked happy to have found what she was looking for. To the young lady who stepped in when things were a bit frantic, I never got a chance to thank you. Thank you. I am not sure if you realised it, but you touched a woman’s heart and made her feel whole again.

There is an initiative that I have been thinking about for some time now. It’s not an idea that’s fully formed yet but I’d like to pursue it and see where it goes. We, as a business, are very blessed to have some really enthusiastic and devoted customers.

We know of some of you, but there are many that we don’t know. I would like to explore the idea that you help to shape the future direction of the business. I’d like to set up a customer advisory group who can help choose the scents we add to the range, give input on marketing initiatives and plans, advice on special offers, give opinions and views on what we are doing well and what we do less well and so on.

If you are a perfume fan, a marketing fundi, or just an enthusiastic person and are happy to give up an hour of your time every so often to give your views on things perfume, please get in touch.
