Why One Woman Chose Dire Straits to Describe Her Perfume 🤔

We have been working with Sauma Radio for some time now. They run an insert on a Saturday afternoon called Scent where they discuss different topics around scent. If you’re ever looking for something fun to do on a Saturday afternoon tune in, it’s a great listen.

I get recordings of the show so I can review the comments and the content and see what we can learn from the interactions the presenters have with their audience.

This last week was an out and about segment where the presenters went around to different businesses in the area and to people on the street and interviewed them to get their views on the idea of a signature scent.

Interestingly no-one asked actually named a fragrance, rather they all spoke about a particular style of fragrance (maybe our idea that signature scents are not such a thing is not far off the mark).

Part of the conversation they were asked if their scent was a song what would it be? Some interesting answers:

Bon Jovi – My Life

50 cent – I’m the man

Ellie Goulding – Love me like you do

Lady Gaga – Love game

Justin Timberlake – SexyBack

Everyone saw their scent as an extension of their personality, which is understandable as we, as people, develop an intimate relationship with our chosen perfume.  Most people chose a song that reflected either how their fragrance made them feel or how they wanted people to see them.

One of the most interesting for me was Dire Straits Private Investigations for a few reasons. The person who chose this was a young woman and she articulated that her scent helps her to get to know herself better.

What was quite clear was that everyone had very personal reasons why they wore perfume. For some, they wanted people to perceive them as successful and influential, for others it is to be seen as attractive and desirable, for others it’s that they live life on their terms.

None of these reasons are superficial, they are all deep seated emotional drivers. The link between scent and emotion is very real.

What do you think? Do you have a signature scent or do you like to experiment?

Any comments or thoughts?
